Lonnie with Afghan Hound
It was in 1967 when I first got involved with show dogs. My first show dog was a Rough Collie. I showed collies for several years before I was introduced in 1969 to Mrs. Joan Blanco, of Stumpy Acres Kennels. She was a successful Afghan Hound Breeder who became my mentor and taught me the finer points of showing, grooming and training dogs.
In 1977, I was approved by the American Kennel Club to be a licensed handler for Afghans. I have shown almost all of the AKC breeds. I specialize in the coated breeds, giant breeds as well as the toy breeds. I had the great pleasure in 1978 of winning my first Best in Show at the Hanover Kennel Club Show in Wilmington, NC with an Afghan Hound. This Best in Show was very special as this was this young Afghan Hound’s very first time in the show ring! I have shown various breeds to Group Placements and increased their rankings within their breed.
Throughout my show career, I have had the pleasure of judging Sweepstakes for the Chihuahua Club of Oklahoma, Potomac Chinese Crested Club and the Finger Lakes Afghan Hound Club. This honor I believe is a culmination of my experience and knowledge of those breeds.
My goal when I am in the ring is to present each and every dog so they standout as the best dog in their class. I enjoy training puppies and young dogs to shape them into winning show dogs. Every time I present a dog in the ring, I show them to win. I believe in global vision when I take on the responsibility of showing dogs, meaning not to just win the points on a given day, but Best of Breed, Group Placements and Best in Show.
